MADE IN ABYSSINIA NINE THOUSAND PRISONERS TAKEN. FORCE FROM DEBRA MARKOS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 25. An Italian force in Abyssinia numbering nearly 9.600. has surrendered after a three-day battle with Sudanese and patriot forces led by British officers. The Italians escaped from Debra Markos some time ago and took to the mountains. Those captured comprised 570 Italians, 5,000 colonial troops and 3,000 native levies, besides some civilians. Seven guns and 170 machine-guns were also taken. A Cairo communique stales: “Operations in the Lakes area, in Abyssinia, are proceeding satisfactorily. Further north, a large column of Italians which escaped from Debra Markos at the beginning of April, and which has since been attempting to evade capture by moving about in the trackless mountain areas north of Addis Ababa, was attacked by Sudanese troops and patriots, led by British officers. After three days of fierce fighting the column capitulated." Giving the particulars of prisoners reported above, the communique adds that 700 civilians were also in the party.
