TWO MEN WOUNDED

AFFAIR IN UPPER REACHES OF WAINOAWA ACCUSED YOUTH BEFORE COURT. BAIL GRANTED & NAME SUPPRESSED. Charged with causing bodily harm, in such circumstances that, had death occurred, he would have been charged with manslaughter, a Masterton youth, aged 20, appeared before Messrs L. J. Taylor and H. E. Pither. J’s. P.. in the Magistrates’ Court this morning. The charge was the sequel to an episode on the upper reaches of the Waingawa River yesterday afternoon. Norman S. Munn and Robert Gilbert, both of Masterton. were wounded. Mr Munn was admitted to the Masterton Hospital with a bullet wound in his arm and Mr Gilbert, who received a wound in his leg. was able to return to his home after treatment. The same bullet wounded both men. passing through Mr Gilbert’s leg and lodging in Mr Munn’s arm. Detective-Sergeant W. Kane asked for a remand until Thursday. June 10. at 10.30 a.m. Mr S. V. Gooding, who appeared for the accused, agreed to the remand and asked for bail. “The charge is a most serious one,” said Mr Kane. He pointed out that one man was in hospital and another had been wounded. If bail were granted it should be substantial and the accused should report daily to the police. Mr Pither: “Is there any danger in granting bail?” Mr Kane: "No. It will be all right.” Application for the suppression of the accused’s name was made by Mr Gooding. He stated that this would not do any harm and would save the accused embarrassment. Mr Kane stated that he had no objection. The Bench decided to grant the application and ordered the suppression of the youth’s name. A remand was granted. Bail was allowed in a sum of £250 (self) and £250 (surety) with the proviso that the accused must report daily to the police.
