CRIPPLED CHILDREN

WAIRARAPA SOCIETY’S GOOD WORK , RESULTS OF PAST YEARS’ TREATMENT. INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP WANTED. Satisfaction with the work being carried out by the society was ex- . pressed by several speakers at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society, held in Masterton last night. The president, Mr S. L. P. Free, presided over an attendance of ten members. Several apologies for absence were received. “It is a matter for satisfaction that the society is making advances,” said Mr Free. Membership had increased. There was a considerable financial improvement, although if liabilities entered into and not completed at the end of the year were taken into ac- | count the surplus would be reduced from £45 to a few pounds. “The wheels of Government turn slowly, although there has been some improvement in the position,” he said, referring to arrangements which were being made for a travelling clinic to visit district hospitals. The Wellington Hospital Board had given its consent and Dr Robertson had agreed to take charge of the clinic. He had been vested with the powers of an inspector of hospitals. Mr Free referred to the proposed establishment of craft centres, with specialised teachers. The Government had been approached but it took the attitude that while it recognised the need the matter would have to be held over until after the war. He read a letter from Sir Charles

Norwood congratulating the executive and members on their work for the crippled children. Reference was also made to the work of the Welfare Officer, Mrs S. N. Kilgour. Mr Free expressed thanks to Mr ,E. M. Hodder as chairman of the executive for his ; untiring interest in the affairs of the society; Mrs Kilgour for her outstanding services; the secretaries, Messrs L. F. Gray and H. A. R. Dunderdale; the Masterton Trust Lands Trust; school teachers for their voluntary assistance in voice production, etc.; the business community; the general public and the Press. “During the past year we have seen more results than at any previous period in the society’s history,” said Mr E. M. Hodder. He said that although the society had been functioning for'five years, it was only beginning to see the results of treatment over that period. It was a little unfortunate that the work carried out was not indicated by the balance sheet. The executive knew that the society received a tremendous amount of assistance which saved expense. Many cases were assisted and were not shown under the heading of expenditure. Normally these would have increased expenditure. It was not possible to state in words the amount of help given. The majority would be the first to say “No” if the question of giving publicity to their generous assistance was raised. The committee

was gratefully indebted to the large number throughout the district both in business and in the professions who gave their services and assistance voluntarily and generously. Mr Hodder suggested that a subcommittee drawn from the general committee should look into the matter of increasing the membership. Mr H. H. Daniell congratulated the society on the results shown in the annual report. A perusal of the report made one feel that the work was thoroughly worth while. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr S. L. P. Free; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs E. M. Hodder, R. C. Drummond, T. Jordan (Mayor of Masterton), J. W. Card (Mayor of Featherston), E. C.
