Robbie Burns once arrived at the Greenock Quay just in time to see a wealthy merchant rescued from the harbour. The man solemnly bestowed a shilling upon his rescuer. The crowd began to boo. and threatened to throw the merchant back into the water. “Let him alone." said Robbie. “The gentleman is, of course, the best judge of the value of his life.”
