WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL NEW MEMBER WELCOMED. CONTROL OF RIVER EROSION. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held this morning. There were present: Councillors F. Court (chairman), D. McGregor, A. McGregor. C. A. Cameron. L. S. Gallon. R. Rayner. E. W. Allen and A. E. Reid. Prior to the commencement of business the chairman referred to the retirement of Councillor W. Renall. who had found it necessary to give up office owing to health reasons. He had pleasure- in welcoming Councillor Ralph Rayner, representing the Parkvale Riding. The councillor in question was one of the third generation of a very old councillor. He was sure Councillor Rayner as a successful farmer would also prove a successful councillor. Councillor Rayner returned his thanks and said lie was aware he had a hard row to hoe in following Councillor Renall, but he assured the meeting that he would.do his best in the interests of his riding and of the County in general. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £7711. 18s lid at the Bank of I New Zealand. Accounts amounting to J £2050 5s 5d were passed. General re-ceipts-since last meeting amounted to £74 4s 3d. I The waterrace overseer, Mr H. J. McKenzie, reported on work done in I the Taratahi and Carrington waterrace districts. The reports were adopted. A letter was read from the Government authorities in relation to river erosion. It was generally agreed by councillors that they were not in a position to go into tiie question. The matter had come before rhe'council unexpectedly and councillors had had no time to go into the question. It seemed, however, that it was a national one and not one for county councils to take up separately. It was resolved that the letter be received in the meantime. Correspondence was received regarding the Shop and Offices Act, pointing out that a Bill would be brought down during the next sitting' of Parliament to make Saturday afternoon the universal half holiday throughout New Zealand. Councillor McGregor said if the law was made compulsory for all stores, lie felt it would be a hardship to small country stores, which did most of their business on at Saturday afternoon. Tiie chairman of the Highways Board wrote notifying that the pre- ’ sent county representative would-re-i tire and that it was necessary to reappoint a fresh representative on the council. It was decided that Councillor A. McGregor be appointed to the District Council. At )2 o’clock the meeting adjourned j for the purpose of electing a chairman for the ensuing 3 years. On the motion of Councillor D. McGregor, seconded by Councillor C. A. Cameron. Councillor Court was reappointed chairman amid applause. Councillor Court thanked councillors , for the honour conferred upon him and ' promised to do his utmost in the in- i tcrest of the county as he had in the i past. His long experience with the County Council extending over 26 years had. he hoped, fitted him for Ihct; position. 'Left sitting).
