OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

■■VMASTERTON’S BIRTHDAY (To the Editor) Sir. —I have nt least celebrated Masterton's 87th birthday to the extent’ (by reason of the’letter of “1881” prompting me to do so) of treading the historic soil of the old Charles Dixon estate in Worksop Road whereon, despite contradiction, still stands the original first portion of our town's hospitable, if small, accommodation house, said by “1881" to have been nonexistent for more than half a century. In all the glory of time's decay (not forgetting the famous gale of a few years back, in which this historic relic of early Masterion settlement days really came near to ending its days), the rooms in which so many of our town’s early arrivals once spent restful nights until homes of their own were built, on sections not far away, have their numbers still on display, for even “1881” to see them, should he care to follow this matter up. Other shades of later-coming guests, for I whose accommodation the two-storey portion might or might not have been j called into existence, interest one far less, from an historic point of view. I however amusing they may seem, j Again thanking your correspondent for his well-meaning endeavour to I "side-track" any chance visit which | otherwise might have been made to this locality.—l am. etc.. N.J.B. Masterton. May 21.
