Season's Heaviest Frost.
Following on 14.9 degrees of frost recorded yesterday morning, the heaviest frost of the season was experienced in Masterton this morning, when 16 degrees were registered. West School. The attention of parents is drawn to an advertisement in this issue regarding the attendance of all pupils of the school at the new open air building on Monday next. Child Drowned. Patricia Dolan, aged 3, daguhter of Dunedin residents, was drowned in the Molyneux River at Clydevale on Tuesday. The child, who was visiting an aunt, was playing on the bank with an older child and slipped into, the river. The body was recovered. Admitted to Probation. A man charged with the theft of a bottle of lotion from a local chemist was convicted and admitted to probation for two years by Mr H. P. j.awry, S.M., in the Masterton Magistrates’ Court this morning. An order for the suppression of the accused's name was made by the Magistrate. Soldier’s Death. A soldier collapsed and died while playing football at the Devonport Domain. He was Gunner Trevor Leonard Williams, aged 20, son of Mr A. L. Williams. Tutamoe, via Dargaville. Gunner Williams was noticed to stagger and fall, and he died before a doctor arrived. Cabinet Portfolios. During their absence from New Zealand the portfolios held by the Minister of Railways, Mr Semple, and by the. Minister of Lands, Mr Langstone, will be administered by the following Ministers: —Lands. Marine and Minister in Charge of Inspection of Machinery: Mr Webb. Spinal Meningitis Epidemic. In a statement last evening, the Minister of Education, Mr Mason, said lie was very pleased to have been informed bv the Minister of Health. Mr Nordmeyer. that the epidemic ol spinal meningitis in the north appeared to be waning. It was thought likely, said Mr Mason, that the schools in the North Auckland district, other than those ot the Bay of Islands County, could be reopened at Hie beginning of next term. An official announcement would be made by the end of the week. ■‘Whether or not the schools are to open, teachers will be required to return to duty as usual at the beginning of the term next week.” said the Minister. Shooting Accident. Keith Robertson, aged IS), medical student. Dunedin, suffered serious injuries in a shooting accident at Riversdale. Southland, on Tuesday. Robertson was a member of a party which was hare shooting. Witli a companion. John Young, school teacher, Clirisli church.
