Mobile Canteen. An appeal made by the Education Department toward the end of last year to pupils of the Native schools io buy and equip a mobile canteen for the Maori battalion serving overseas has met with a splendid response. The Minister of Education, Mr Mason, in an interview last night, said that just over £9OO had been raised for this purpose, representing an average of Is 8d a head of the school population. Patriotic Effort. A plea for closer co-ordination of patriotic effort in the present crisis was made by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, when speaking at a welcome luncheon given to Lady Newall and his Excellency by the central committee of the combined patriotic societies of Auckland. “Individual efforts are not enough." said his Excellency. ‘ They must bo unified and coordinated if they are to have the maxi'mum effect, and the present crisis deimands the maximum. Nothing less will do "
British Israel Address. There was a large attendance at the Country Women's Club. Masterton. last night, when an address entitled "European Federation —What of the Empire?" was given by Miss M. E. Donaldson. of the Wellington headquarters > of the British Israel Federation. Mr T. A. Cunningham presided. Miss Donaldson covered an extensive field in dealing with her subject and received an attentive hearing, fehe was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her address. Shortage of Bottles. The glass and bottle-making industry in New Zealand is unable Io meet requirements for certain classes of bottles because of the shipment, to New Zealand troops abroad of bottled beer, aerated waters and cordials. The industry is concentrating on the manufacture of bottles for medicines, beer, aerated waters and cordials, and food bottles generally. and in the circumstances it does not expect to cope with tile demand fmtoilet bottles, for example, for some months. Requirements in bottles for New Zealand overseas troops are expected to involve a cost approaching £lOO.OOO within the next year. and. as such bottles are not returned, there is an extra strain on the industry
