STATE THEATRE
“SOUTH RIDING.” One of the finest and most entertaining dramas ever made by a British studio is “South Riding,” which will be shown tonight. Based on the famous Winifred Holtby novel, “South Riding” tells a vivid story of life in a small Yorkshire town. The main characters are superbly played by an exceptionally strong cast, headed by Ralph Richardson, Edna Best, Edmund Gwenn. Ann Todd, Marie Lohr and John Clements. Richardson has easily the best role of his screen career as Squire Came, tragically burdened by poverty and a demented wife. On the local council he stands for the old order of things, clashing with Astell (John Clements) a conscientious reformer bent on putting through his housing scheme which will do away with the “Shacks,” a collection of slum hovels. Sarah Eurton (Edna Best) the newly appointed schoolmistress, is actively interested in the scheme. She appeals to Carne to drop his obstructive tactics and support the scheme, but is rebuffed. Events move quickly to a grippingly dramatic climax which results in happiness for Carne and Sarah, disgrace for Snaith and Huggins, and successful fruition of Astell's housing plan.
