AIR DOGFIGHTS
DURING ENEMY RAIDS ON BRITAIN SEVEN GERMAN MACHINES DESTROYED. I ONE BRITISH PLANE LOST. BUT I PILOT SAFE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 16. A number of enemy aircraft which crossed the south-east coast of Britain today were promptly driven back by R.A.F. fighters. Seven were destroyed by fighters or anti-aircraft gun fire. One British fighter was lost, but the pilot is safe. No bombs were dropped. The day’s operations gave rise to a series of dogfights. The German planes were apparently on reconnaissance. Many of the fights took place as high as 30.000 feet but some Messerschmitts which came down to 500 feet soon found the ground defences too hot for them and fled out to sea. R.A.F. OFFENSIVE. Last night, enemy air activity was again on a small scale. The R.A.F. made widespread attacks on enemy objectives in Germany and France. Hamburg and Berlin had big raids and docks and shipping in north-west French ports and a Netherlands port were also attacked. A British patrol vessel shot down an enemy aircraft in the early hours of Thursday morning. The plane crashed into the sea. HANOVER AS TARGET MANY FIRES STARTED. BIG BOMBERS USED AGAINST BERLIN. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY. May 16. Bomber Command aircraft last night attacked targets in Germany. Hanover, it is learned, was the main objective of a strong force of aircraft. Many fires were started in the industrial quarters of the town. Some of our largest bombers attacked Berlin. Smaller attacks were made, on objectives at Hamburg and Cuxhaven. An Air Ministry communique states: “Objectives in last night’s R.A.F. offensive operations included docks at Calais, Boulogne and Dieppe. Four aircraft of the Coastal Command attacked docks and shipping at St. Nazaire and Lorient and other aircraft attacked docks at Ijmuideh. None of our aircraft are missing.”
