DISASTROUS DEFEAT
SUFFERED BY JAPANESE TEN THOUSAND KILLED OR CAPTURED. ACCORDING TO CHUNGKING REPORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright! (Received This Day. 9.20 a.m.) LONDON. May 16. A Chungking Central News report states that the Japanese have suffered a disastrous defeat in the Hupeh Province, 10,000 being killed or captured, during ten days of fighting. It is claimed that the Japanese have been driven back to the bases in north, central and western Hupeh, from which the offensive began on May 5. MEDIATION NOT WANTED JAPANESE MINISTERS CONFER. (Received This Day. 9.20 a.m.) TOKIO. May 16. The Informalion Board spokesman. Mr Ishii, said Mr Matsuoka and the Japanese Minister to Nanking, Mr Hoda. had reached an agreement on the China policy, both favouring bolstering up the Nanking Government, also rejecting third Power mediation, including that of the United States and Germany, relative to the Sino-Japan-ose hostilities.
