His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral. Sir Cyril Newall, has accepted the office of patron of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Private G. S. McKay, of Featherston, is among a party of soldiers invalided home from Fiji, and who have arrived at Auckland.
■ Mr H. T. Marsh, of Masterton, who was injured in a motoring accident at Rangitumau recently and was admitted to Masterton Hospital, is reported to be making satisfactory progress.
Mr C. Walker. Bannister’ Street, Masterton. will shortly leave Masterton to take up an appointment as draughting assistant with the Public Works Department. Wellington. Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs R. H. Williams, of Masterton. that their son, Gunner G. Williams, who left New Zealand with the First Echelon, is safe and well.
Mr E. Ryan, of South Road. Masterton, has been appointed caretaker of the Solway Showgrounds, in succession to Mr W. J. Jacobsen, who has resigned to take up military duties.
Mr Allan Tong, manager of Hawke's Bay Amusements. Ltd., and formerly of Masterton. has received notice of his transfer to Palmerston North, where he will become manager of Palmerston North Amusements, Ltd. The death has occurred at the age of 77, says a Dunedin Press Association message, of Mr William B. Steel, who was prominently associated with lodge work, especially Druids and Masonic lodges. For a long period he was secretary of the Otago Expansion League.
There was a large attendance at the Savage Club rooms. Masterton. last night when Leading Aircraftman W. A. Howes was entertained. An enjoyable time was spent in dancing. Mr R. O'Kane made the guest of honour a presentation on behalf of those present. Leading Aircraftman Howes returned thanks. The death has occurred of Mr James Buchan Graham, manager of the Otahuhu Railway Workshops, says an Auckland Press Association message. Born in 1884, he was educated in Lawrence. #.An Otago Rugby representative forward, he toured California and Australia. He leaves a widow and three sons.
The Rev D. N. Pryor, a New Zealand minister who is at present supplying a church in Dunfermline, Scotland. is to receive a call from the congregation of St Andrew’s Church, Auckland. Mrs Pryor, who was formerly Miss Leila Buchanan, was well known before her marriage as travelling secretary of the Presbyterian Young Women’s Bible Class Union. Major and Mrs Neeve. of the Salvation Army, Masterton, have been granted sick leave for an indefinite period. Their successors to the command of the Salvation Army activities in Masterton are Major and Mrs Ransom. Adjutant Edith Christopher, who has been relieving for a number of weeks in Masterton, is to be transferred to the Mosgicl Corps.
