FEATHERSTON

MOTHERS’ LEAGUE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Mothers League, held in the Parish Hall yesterday, which was presided over by Mrs Arch. Clark. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Higgs, who chose for her subject, "The Women of Hong Kong.” Mrs Higgs gave an interesting address, being very conversant with ner subject, having lived in Hong Kong for the past seven years with her husband, who was engaged in missionary work. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Higgs: The hostesses were Mesdames Arch. Clark, H. Cundy, W. Charles, G. Burt and M. Brown.

CROQUET CLUB

SEASON CLOSED.

The local Croquet Club officially closed the season yesterday, a social gathering being held at the residence of the president, Mrs R. T. Saunders. A happy time was spent, the competition winners being Mesdames G. Hankers, E. O’Neale and J. B. McKenna. A vote of sympathy in their recent bereavement was passed to Miss Card and Mr Card. Mrs E. M. Wakely, president of the Wairarapa Association, presented the trophies Ivon during the season as follows:—Eva Card Champion Tropny, A Grade Rose Bowl, won by Mrs R. T. Saunders; runner-up, Mrs E. A. O'Neale (Mrs Saunders’ Trophy); Wakely Rose Bowl (Junior Champion), B Grade, won by Mrs Allen Donald; C Grade, won by Mrs H. Neilsen (Mrs E. O'Neale’s Trophy); runner-up, Mrs S. Batchelor (Mrs Allen Donald's Trophy); Matthews’ Cup, Handicap Singles, won by Mrs L. G Benton; Saunders’ Memorial Cup, Handicap Doubles, Mesdames R. T. Saunders and S. Batchelor. Golf. Personal Items. - Miss Norma Shepherd, who is a medical student, arrived from Dunedin yesterday to spend the term holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs N. C. C. Shepherd. Miss Margaret Salmond is a Wellington visitor to Featherston, and is the guest of Miss Barbara Sharp. Mr C. F. Rowe, of Wellington, who has been visiting his mother, Mrs E. Rowe, Underhill Road, has returned home.

Miss N. Stewart, of Levin, who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs Geo. Hyland, “Totaranui,” has left for Masterton, 'where she will be the guest of Mrs E. Barton, Lansdowne. Mrs L. McKenna, of Pihautea, is on a short visit to Alfredton. The funeral of the late Alistair John McKenzie, eldest son of Mr and Mrs R. G. McKenzie. Ballance, Pahiatua, took place at the Featherston Cemetery yesterday afternoon, after a short service at St." Theresa’s Church, which was conducted by the Rev. Father Develin, of Carterton. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. A. Card. T. McKenzie, R. A. Y. Boagey and R. J. Gregory. Ladies’ Guild. The two competitions drawn recently by the Tauherenikau Ladies’ Guild resulted as follows:—Traycloth. Mr E. A. Thompson, Carterton; knitting bag. Miss Elva Reed, Tauherenikau. Home Guard. Al the weekly Home Guard parade, physical training, squad drill, three fir-’ ing positions, and a lecture on the Mills bomb, was the programme. There was a marked improvement in the general parade. A meeting of the executive was held during the course of the evening to endeavour to find ways and means of increasing the attendance, enrolling new recruits, and sundry other matters pertaining to the welfare of the Guard.. It was anticipated that the Guard would have some 40 or 50 rifles by the next parade.
