TOBACCO FOR BRITAIN
UNDER LEASE AND LEND ACT SUPPLIES FOR PRISONERS OF WAR GERMANY CUTS OFF FREE ISSUE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.7 p.m.) RUGBY, May 15. America has agreed to send tobacco to Britain under the Lease and Lend Act, Mr A. H. Macwcll, the Tobacco Controller, announced. Supplies sufficient for all Britain's needs arc already awaiting shipment. More tobacco is being released from bond than ever in. the history of the industry. Information having been received that Germany has discontinued the free issue of cigarettes to British prisoners of war. the War Office in consequence has taken parallel action where German prisoners of war are concerned. This does not mean, however that parcels of tobacco and cigarettes despatched from Britain are not reaching prisoners in Germany. There is much evidence that parcels are getting through quite regularly. Prisoners also are able to purchase cigarettes at the camp canteens, but obviously the quality is by no means the same.
