CARTERTON

SHOOTING SEASON TO CLOSE ON SATURDAY. ("Times-Age” Special.) The swan and duck shooting season will come to an end on Saturday. A large number of shooters are at the Wairarapa Lake and other places in the vicinity for the purpose of securing their final bags for the season. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT PARKVALE. The monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs W. Adlam presiding over a good attendance of members.' Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames C. Downes, A. Elkins and J. Stubbs. It was decided to make up six soldiers’ parcels again this month. Invitations were received to the birthday parties of the Carterton Women’s Division and the Carterton Women’s Institute. Members of the Institute will attend each meeting. Final Arrangements were made for the Institute’s dance and euchre tournament to be held on Saturday, May 24. A member donated a sucking pig for the highest score in the euchre section. Miss H. McKinnon gave a report on the Federation meeting for which she was thanked and presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs D. Adams read a number of interesting letters received from her son who is in the Fleet Air Arm. Mrs Adams was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The monthly competitions were judged by Mrs G. Hart and resulted as follows: —Seniors: Coffee sponge for the Wellington Y.M.C.A.: Mrs L. Rayner, 1; Mrs J. Rayner, 2; Mrs C. Jenson, 3. Best flower: Mrs L. Rayner, 1; Mrs H. Rayner, 2; Mrs J. Rayner, 3. Juniors: Coffee sponge: Miss S. Rayner, 1; Miss M. Adlam, 2. Best flower: Mrs A. Franks, 1; Miss S. Rayner, 2. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Hart, W. King and McKenzie. GOLF LADIES’ GAMES. The following is the draw for the club .medal round and the C.'M. trophy to be played on the Taratahi links on Saturday:—Miss Berrill and Mrs Forbes; Mrs Moroney and Miss Freer; Mrs Callender and Miss Lamb; Mrs Candy and Miss I. Dwane, Archer and Rzoska. Mrs Ashton’s orchestra will provide the music for the dancing. Personal Items. Mr A. G. Rabbitts, who has been an inmate of Masterton Hospital for some time, has returned to his home. Hockey. The following is the Carterton A team to play Old Boys at Carterton at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday:—Archer, Fitzgerald, Andrews (captain), Goodin, Hopkins, Abbott, W. Morris, H. Morris, D. Williams, Gallon, McKenzie, L. Roska (reserve). Alarm of Fire. Following on an alarm last evening the fire brigade turned out promptly to a fire in Mr Watkin's bottle factory. A resident who was passing the premises at the time noticed that some window curtains were on fire. No one was on the premises, and he promptly gave the alarm. Beyond the burning of the curtains no further damage was done. Boy Scouts' Card Party. At the weekly card party held by the Boy Scout Committee last even- , ing, there was a good attendance.
