HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR \ Fruit, 'Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Rhubarb and seakale should have all the dead leaves removed from the crowns; roots; may be lifted for forcing if desired. Celery should be covered with some protective material against frosts. Plant out cabbage and cauliflower for spring supplies. Make a sowing of broad beans and plant some shallots and potato onions. Keep the onions well weeded and give a dusting of old soot to keep away pests. Cut down the /asparagus when the tops have ripened and before the seed falls on the beds. FLOWER GARDEN. Keep'the soil stirred between anemones and ranunculus as soon as they show through the ground. Complete any arrears of bulb planting without delay. The various kinds |of hardy liliums should! be planted without delay. Pot up a few liliums for early flower under glass. Plant out Iceland poppies, stocks, pansies, cyclamen, calendulas and primula malacoides. It will soon be rose planting time, so see that the beds are well prepared in good time to allow the soil to settle. Evergreen trees and shrubs should be transplanted now before the soil becomes too cold and wet. Spanish and (English iris can still be planted in well-drained soil. FRUIT GARDEN. Where trees have been badly infested with pests or disease, give a good spraying now; some burning of the foliage will do little harm. Cuttings of bush fruits may still be inserted where fresh stock is required. Prepare the sites for planting fruit trees in good time. Where fruit trees are grown on grass land, see that the circles are kept clear of weeds around; the base., Plant out strawberries in well-prepared ground; the soil should be made firm.
