WAR SERVICE WOMEN’S AUXILIARY. All able bodied women over eighteen years are asked to enrol in the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. There seems to be many misunderstandings about what women who join will be called upon to do. First of all, they need not necessarily do anything except what they are now doing, but by enrolling, they are helping io complete a record of what every one is able to do in an emergency, so that if ever such a time arises, there will be no confusion. For those who have the time to do more there will be classes held in several subjects. First of all, everyone is asked to make themselves physically fit. For this purpose, instructors will give a course of physical exercises and drill. Here again, no one who does not wish or who is physically unable, need take the exercises, but if it is physically possible, it will probably be much better for most people to take them. The exercises will be graded, so that elderly women will not be doing anything as strenuous as girls in their teens. Some may even take only breathing exercises. Then again the importance of first aid work is emphasised. As the enrolment is voluntary, so are the examinations. Those who enter the Cycle Corps will learn signalling as a matter of course. Transport workers will learn about the mechanism of cars and those who are willing to cook in an emergency, will be given instruction in how to cook for large numbers, without electricity or stoves and under very adverse cir- 1 cumstances. Anyone wishing to enrol in Featherston can do so at the Red Cross Society's rooms from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. on May 15, JO, 22 and 23, and from 10.30 a.m. to noon on May 17 and 24. Civic Pride. The local. Borough Council prides itself on keeping the town spick and span, and has decided to call tenders for the trimming of hedges at Dorset Square, the cemetery, the recreation ground, to Town Hall, the library, and the trees in Clifford Square. Tenders will close at noon on May 19, and information concerning the conditions attached to the work can be obtained at the Council Chambers. A Brilliant Spectacle. Local residents who visited Raumati Beach on Sunday last wore very much impressed with the brilliant spectacle of some 509 horses and men from the Foxton Camp Mounted Rifle Brigade returning along the beach after the recent military manoeuvres.
