Sheep Dog Triads Cancelled. The North Island sheep dog trials, scheduled for Northland, have been cancelled. The meningitis outbreak is reported as the cause. Health Stamp Sales. The numbers of 1940 health stamps sold, according to a philatelic bulletin issued by the Post and Telegraph Department, were: —Id plus id, 284.756; 2d plus Id. 359,972. A Maori Councillor Fined. A well-known Maori, Councillor Brown, Waipouri, was fined £lO in the Magistrates’ Court'. Rawene, yesterday for permitting a tangi to be held when such gatherings have been prohibited by the Medical Officer of Health. Views on War Changed. The Minister of Mines. Mr Webb, referring to the threat to New Zealand, said at a civic welcome to Mr W. Holmes, Trades Union delegate from Great Britain, that this country would make an excellent surprise packet for some hostile power if Germany were victorious. Because of this he and his colleagues had changed their views. He himself —as did his colleagues—hated war with all his heart, but realised that it was necessary to preserve all that they held dear. No Benefit to Board. An interesting position was revealed at a meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, when Mr P. G. Guy asked that, in view of street lights in Feilding now being off' from 1 a.m. onward, more than a 5 per cent reduction in the charges for lights on the series system for the winter months be made. The engineer. Mr W. A. Waters, said that this reduction would be 40 per cent of the cost of servicing the lamps. Actually the board saved no electricity or the cost of it —the Government saved that.
Gift to Legless Airman. An inlaid cigar and cigarette box. made by Mr H. C. Osbourne, Auckland, is to be sent by air to England as a gift from the New Zealand War Amputees’ Association to Squadron Leader D. R. S. Bader. D. 5.0.. D.F.C., the legless leader of the Canadian fighter squadron of the Royal Air Force. The gift is a tribute from the association to the manner in which Squadron Leader Bader has overcome his infirmity and transformed himself from a helpless cripple into a worldfamous air fighter. The maker of the box is a disabled soldier and samples of his work are in the possession of ihe King and Queen. Mr Winston Churchill and Viscount Bledisloe.
Frost in Masterton. A frost of 5.1 degrees was recorded in Masterton this morning.
Medical Board Sittings. Sittings of the Medical Board will be held in Masterton on Tuesday. Wednesday and Friday of next week, commencing each day at 10 a.m.
Electric Power Board Profit. At the meeting of the Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board, the secretary-manager, reported that the year’s working had resulted in a total profit of £BOO, including a transfer of £451 from the trading account. Free Medicine Scheme. All chemists in Wellington were now participating in the scheme for the provision of pharmaceutical benefits under the Social Security Act, and the scheme was operating very satisfactorily, said the president of the Pharmacy Board, Mr C. B. McDougall, yesterday. Map for Motorists. The Wairarapa Automobile Association. through its local representative, Mr A. T. P. Hubbard, recently presented the Masterton Borough Coun-< cil with a plan of Masterton borough for the guidance of campers at the Mawley Park Motor Camp. The plan in addition to having the streets clearly indicated, shows the location of the various golf links, swimming baths, tennis courts and other playing areas. The telephone numbers of the medical practitioners are listed with their names, together with other information which should be of interest to • visiting motorists using the Mawley Motor Camp. The Borough Council has expressed its appreciation of the gift. Rare Books in America. Data received by the editor of the Literary Supplement of “The Times" of London from the Bibliographical Society of America have enabled him to make a digest of the bibliophile treasures to be listed in the second census of fifteenth-century books owned by libraries in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The result of the first census was published in 1919 and long since has been out ot print. The editor writes: "While there arc nine more or less perfect copies of the 42 line Gutenberg Bible as well as numerous fragments, of the 36 line edition, there are but four single leaves and one double folio in the whole of North and South America. Of the Balbus ’Catholicon’ of 1460 there are 10 copies, and of the ‘Dialogus rations' of Matthew of Cracow, six copies. Of the 'Donatos’ of I about 1450 there are three copies, of I the 28. 30 and 33 line editions respec-1 lively."
