LOSSES OF SHIPS
REPORTED STATEMENT BY MR GOODFELLOW. SAID TO BE CONSIDERABLE. EXAGGERATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) SYDNEY. May 11. The New York correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" reports that Mr William Goodfellow, managing director of Amalgamated Dairies. LtdAuckland, stated that 40 per cent of the ships carrying New Zealand dairy products to England had been sunk, causing food to accumulate in New Zealand. Mi- Goodfellow, who is flying to London in an endeavour to obtain shipping space for surplus New tealand primary products, said that 20 ships with refrigerated space would relieve the position. Although official figures are not available, it is learned in authoritative circles in Wellington that the percentage of sinkings reported to have been given by Mr Goodfellow is a considerable exaggeration. Since the end of November the losses of ships actually engaged in the New Zealand trade have been very small compared with those for the previous 12 months.
