BASKETBALL

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. 1 COMMENTS ON MATCHES, s In the Collegians 1 v lona match on i Saturday the pace was fast.from start i to finish. Joan Gemmell shot some brilliant goals for Collegians, while C. Tal- , hot did good work for lona. The pass- " ing was long at times, and combination was lacking. Teams should try more to combine within the thirds, rather - than get the ball, to the goal third by 3 two or three long passes. The final score was Collegians 17 goals, lona 12. ; The Carterton team showed good ; form on Saturday when it defeated . Stars 11. by 11 to 5. They are gaining experience and should prove formidable opponents by the end of the season. More attention should be paid to foot work and running in straight. Stars 11. take their game too lightly and would do better if they concentrated more. Greytown Hospital also showed up well. The low score (Greytown 3 goals, Collegians 11. 1 goal) was mainly because of the shortening of the time of the match. The passing showed marked improvement. Collegians 11. require more practice together in passing, as well as goal throwing. They also take their game too lightly. The best match of the day was undoubtedly that between Stars 1 and College 1. The passing was quick and accurate. The passing in Star’s goal third was particularly good, while E. Jones constantly shot well. The College centre is their strong third. The speed was maintained right up till the last moment, and an exciting finish .'was witnessed. Stars 1 winning by 19 I to 13. Good goaling was the feature of the match between Masterton Hospital and the College 11. team. The passing of the College team was worthy of spe- i cial mention, being clean and quick, i Hospital’s centres were a tower of I strength and it was due more to them I than the defence that the goal throw- I ers were able to get the ball and shoot I so often. The Masterton Hospital team I eventually won by 2G goals to 24.
