HOPES OF RELEASING BRITISH FORCES, AID PROMISED AGAINST AGGRESSION. (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) ADDIS ABABA, May 12. The Emperor. Haile Selassie, declared his intention to release British forces from reconquering Ethiopia and to aid their fight, against aggression elsewhere. The Emperor’s message to President Roosevelt read: "The atonement of unprovoked aggression against Ethiopia in 1935 may prove the beginning of disaster for all aggressors.” CAPTURES AT TOBRUK GOOD PROGRESS IN ABYSSINIA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, May 12. A Cairo communique states: “Our mechanised patrols at Tobruk surprised a considerable party of the enemy, inflicting casualties and capturing 32 prisoners. In the Solium area, our patrols yesterday, continuing harassing tactics, captured an enemy tank, motor and anti-tank gun. “Advancing from north of Amba Alagi, Indian troops again made important progress, capturing Gumsa and taking four pack-guns, together with quantities of other war material. Meanwhile, South African troops are continuing their advance northwards on Amba Alagi. Operations in the southern areas are proceeding well. “All is quiet at Habbania and Basra.” SUEZ CANAL BOMBED FOR THIRD NIGHT IN SUCCESSION. ONLY SLIGHT DAMAGE DONE. CAIRO. May 11. The Suez Canal zone was bombed for the third successive night. As on the previous night, only slight damage was done.
