The Very Rev T. P. Weatherhog, Dean of Hamilton, has been appointed chaplain of a hospital ship.
Private H. Knox, of Masterton. was home on leave from the Trentham Military Camp at the weekend. The Hon H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Education, is visiting the teachers’ refresher courses in Wanganui and Palmerston North today. A meeting of 80 delegates representing the branches in all parts of the Otaki electorate last night chose Mr B. V. Cooksley as official National candidate for Otaki.
The ft lends of Miss “Paddy" Wrigley, who suffered injuries in a recent motor accident at Rangitumau, will be pleased to learn that she is making satisfactory progress.
Mr Charles Adam Mountfort died in Feilding on Sunday, aged 88 years. He was a member of the party led by the late Mr James Stewart which made the original survey of the Manchester block, including Palmerston North. Wing Commander M. W. Buckley. M.8.E., till recently’ commanding officer of the New Zealand Bomber Squadron in Britain, has been promoted to the rank of group captain. He has returned to take commasd of the station at which the New Zealand squadron has its headquarters. Wing Commander C. E. Kay. D.F.C., 0.8. E., is now commanding the New Zealanders.
The funeral of the late Mr Henry King took place in Masterton yesterday’ afternoon. The Rev. H. S. Kings conducted a service at the Methodist Church, and the choir sang “Crossing the Bar.” There was a large attendance of mourners. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence, including tributes from the Masterton Methodist Church and Loyal Orange Lodge, N0.,24. The pall-bearers were Messrs E. M. Hodder, H. Byford, R. Jamieson, S. H. Ralph, F. E. Wells and F. G. Rutter.
The death has occurred of Mr Harry Norman Cooke, a well-known figure in business circles in Palmerston North. Mr Cooke, who was born in London in 1863, arrived at Palmerston North in 1908. He saw service in France during the Great War, and has done much good work in the interests of other returned men. Mr Cooke is survived by his widow, who is at present in California, and three sons —Captain A. C. Cooke, M.M., N.Z.T.S.. Gisborne; Mr G. C. Cooke, president of the Delaware Lackawanna Western Coal Co., New York; and Mr L. C. Cooke, dairy instructor, Te Kuiti.
