Gift to Patriotic Fund. The National Patriotic Fund Board has received a cheque for £ 1000 from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. This sum is to be divided between the provincial patriotic councils in proportion to their respective quotas in the all-purposes appeal. The Reserve Bank’s donation is in addition to contributions from other banks acknowledged by the board at the end of last week.
Taupiri Coal Mines. Lower profit and a reduction in dividend are features of the accounts of Taupiri Coal Mines Ltd. for the year | ended March 31. Nel profit was £9407, against £10,592, and an ordinary dividend of Is 3d a share is recommended, equal to 6', per cent, against Is 6d. or 71 per cent last time. After providing £2908 additional income tax for 193940, £2755 is carried forward, against £5661 brought in. Drunken Motorists. A sentence of 21 days’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday on John Moriarty. labourer, aged 37. who pleaded guilty to having been intoxicated in charge of a motor lorry in Adelaide Road on May 8. The magistrate disqualified Moriarty from holding a driver'. 1 ; licence for three years and till reinstatement by the court. At Auckland yesterday, Aubrey Happy, aged 29, Clevodon, pleaded guilty in the Magistrates’ Court to intoxication while in charge of a vehicle, and was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, his licence being cancelled I'Qr a yeai.
Frost in Masterton. A frost of 3 degrees was registered in Masterion this morning.
County Meeting Adjourned. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council, called for this afternoon. was adjourned for a week, owing to a bereavement in the family of the chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee. of Tc Ore Ore. Found Dead. The body of Leonard de Vcre Brooks, a middle-aged man, was found in an upstairs room at the rear of his business premises in Heretaunga Street. Hastings, yesterday. He had conducted a toilet saloon for several years. An assistant found the body in the room, into which a gas tube had been led. Barley Sugar Tins Wanted. 1 Members of the Masterton Ladies' Patriotic Committee arc at present packing parcels for sending to soldiers overseas. Empty barley sugar tins arc required for packing purposes, and persons having same are requested to leave tins at the Ladies’ Rest Room. Dixon Street. Young Farmers’ Club Membership. Considerable discussion took place at the annual meeting of the Manawatu District Committee of Young Farmers' Clubs about whether women should be admitted to the clubs. A remit on the subject was brought for- j ward by the Kairanga club’s repre- | sentative and it was strongly support- ! ed by both the Orona Downs and ■ Whakarongo clubs, which have already [ formed auxiliaries, the women attend- i ing all meetings and assisting with i club activities. It was decided to recommend to the council that where | clubs desired to enrol female members | no obstacle should be put in their way
