BRITISH BY-ELECTION
OVERWHELMING GOVERNMENT MAJORITY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 10. The result of the first contested Parliamentary by-election for some months was announced, when Captain Basil Peto (Conservative) was returned as member for the King's Norton Division of Birmingham, the former member, Mr Ronald Cartland (Conservative) being reported missing at Dunkirk last June. An interesting feature of the election was the appearance of an Independent Pacifist candidate, Mr Stuart Morris, and of an Independent “Reprisals" candidate. Dr Smith, who pressed for retaliatory air attacks against German towns. It will be recalled that lhe business and residential quarters of Birmingham have been heavily bombed. Both these candidates suffered overwhelming defeat and forfeited their deposits. The result was:—Captain Peto. 21,573: Dr Smith. 1696; Mr Morris, 1552. Majority, 19,877. In the 1935 election Mr Cartland, with 24,559 votes, had a majority of 1875 over a Socialist opponent, Mr G. R. Mitchinson.
