TRAGIC DEATH
— DEER STALKER KILLED. SHOT WITH OWN RIFLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) PALMERSTON NORTH. This Day. While deer-stalking yesterday around lhe foothills of. the Ruahine Ranges behind Table Flat, Apiti. a young man, aged 27. was accidentally shot. He was Mr Donald McMurtrie, whose parents reside at Table Flat, but who are at present visiting Hamilton. Deceased. who was working for Mr R. V. Redmayne, Sanson, went to Table Flat for the weekend. Early in the morning he went into the bush and shot a hind and then returned for breakfast. Later he joined his brother-in-law, Mr W. Trim, of Table Flat, on another expedition. About 12.30 the stalkers were in the vicinity of what is known as the Oroua Forks, a region which is particularly rough. In negotiating some rocks Mr McMurtrie’s rifle, a .303, was accidentally discharged, the bullet entering his back, resulting in instantaneous death.
