BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL. (“Times-Age" Special.) A meeting of the Featherston Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. The Mayor, Mi J. W. Card, presided, and there were also present Councillors C. R. Skipage, M B Tait, C. C. Kenward, H. W. Cundy and T. G. Hardie. An apology for absence was received from . Councillor W. Johnson. 1 Accounts passed were: District Funa account, £l5l 5s 4d; Cemetery account, £lO 9s sd; Library account. £lO 18s lOd; Water Supply Loan, 1936, account, 19s 6d; total. £173 13s Id. Receipts were: District Fund account, £127 17s 3d; Cemetery account, £6; Library account, £1 9s 9d; Domain account, £5; total, £l4O 7s. . . . The Minister of Supply wrote giving information concerning the use of corrugated iron. The Director of National Services advised as to the prodecure to .apply for capitation for Home Guard parades, and asking members of the Emergency Precautions Scheme to volunteer for the supply of blood required for transfusion at hospitals. The Dominion Fire Controller wrote regarding a shortage in the supply o fire brigade hose and asking that he be supplied with the information concerning the quantity of serviceable hose the brigade had in hand and as to its future requirements. The clerk is -to obtain the information from the bngacle. Mr H. F. Toogood supplied plans regarding purchase of land needed for the new water scheme. The Wairarapa Racing Club wrote stating that Mr D. C. Collins had been appointed to vote on its behalf at the Borough elections in place of the late Mr Q. Donald. The New Zealand Standards Institutes forwarded a copy of standard specifications for bucket pumps. The Featherston Domain Board s balance sheet was approved as read. The ranger reported having dealt with 16 head of cattle. MAYOR’S REVIEW RETIREMENT OF COUNCILLORS. At the conclusion ? f . Council meeting last night the May (Mr J. W. Card), reviewed the position of the borough in the last three years and thanked the councillors for then co-operation. The financial position as compared with last year showed that all accounts were in credit, the |“ account to the extent of £2OO as against £BO a year ago, he sa)d. The rates outstanding at the end of fl ‘ ial ? cial year just finished amounted to £169 as-against £443 the year. During last year additions to the water supply had been completed and benefit had been noticed in the diy months. He regretted having to say farewell to a retiring councillor Mi Tait, who was retiring aftei over thnty years’ service. He felt that the advance of time demanded that he should leave borough matters to younger and more active men. His loss would be noticed, *aid Mr Card, as during his term he had acted with great success as chairman in the old Town Board days, and, deputy, mayor since the incorporation of the borough, chairman of the Works Committe and the Water and Drainage Committee. In fact, there was no department in the council’s affairs m which he had not at times had a guiding hand. Although ceasing to be a member of the council Mr Card said he was sure Mr Tait’s advice and help in matters that might arise in future would be sought. Councillor Watson, who had served for ten years, and Councillor Viles for three years, had joined the forces. Both had served the council well and they would look forward to seeing them back again. Councillor Johnson, on account of his health, had retired. He was with the council for five years. He was a reliable man the council was sorry to see leave. The clerk and employees outside have dischaiged their duties satisfactorily. Councillor Skipage, deputy mayor, endorsed the mayor's remarks. Councillor Tait, in reply, thanked the council for the sentiments expressed by the mayor and expressed his appreciation to the mayor of the manner in which he had conducted the council’s business. Personal. Miss Wharton left yesterday for Nelson where she is spending the holidays. Miss M. Lawson. Martinborougn. Miss J. Lawson, Wellington, Miss J. McKenzie, Wellington, Miss M. Rowles. Carterton, Miss J. Hatton. Greytown, and Mrs L. Robinson, Wellington, are home for the school holidays.
