ROAD FATALITIES
THIRTEEN IN APRIL. CARE NEEDED AT NIGHT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A statement that 13 persons were killed in traffic accidents last, month was made yesterday by the Minister of Transport, Mr Semple. He said that five of them were passengers, three were drivers, three cyclists, one a pedestrian, and one a pillion rider. Three fatal accidents occurred in the Christchurch metropolitan area and one in the Dunedin area. The balance were in rural districts.
The Minister said that, though the full details regarding the accidents had not yet been received, it appeared that many had occurred at night. With increasing hours of darkness during the next five weeks it was more than ever necessary for all classes of road users to take greater care in the evenings. Pedestrians should wear lightcoloured clothing, keep to the footpath, and on open roads where no footpaths were available they should face the oncoming traffic. Cyclists should carry a good light and reflector.
