WORLD AFTER THE WAR
RAPID & CONSTANT CHANGE. The world, after the war will not consist simply of a victorious Britain and a conquered Germany, says the “Yorkshire Post.” It will be an increasingly interwoven world of constant and f rapid change; new ideas, new ways of ( life, new technical and economic pro■J cesses, and new international relationships will press their challenge un- ’ ceasingly upon us all. Are we to ? mortgage lhe future by declaring that 5 Britain will never consent to live in amity with the German people again? It is most unlikely that our children , and grandchildren would consider that a satisfactory solution of the European ; problems of their own day. Nor is it at all likely that such a solution would ' commend itself permanently to other countries, whose relationships with Germany are bound to be-quite different from, and in many cases much closer than, our own. Such a solution never could be in fact satisfactory, for it would shelve the task of tackling the many and various causes of modern war at their roots. It was only after lhe economic crash of 1931 that the Nazi movement began to make ’ serious headway in Germany. Whatever we do to Germany after this war, Europe will never be free from circumstances promoting wars until all , countries learn to co-operate for their ( common social and economic welfare. Germany cannot simply be left out of ; the learning of that lesson. She is in- ( extricably a part of Europe, and soon- i er or later she must be made into a , good European if Europe and the ] world are to live with her in prosper- c ity and peace. When we think of r peace terms, let us not be guided by those always treacherous advisers, the c passions of the moment. Let us not j think only of our generation and its fl sufferings but of future generations, in v this and other countries, who will have t. to administer the world we bequeath to them. t.
