SEASON OPENS AT EGMONT STEEPLECHASE TO RIOTOUS. FRIESLAND WINS McRAE CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAWERA, May 8. The winter racing season opened at Hawera today, when the Egmont Racing Club held the first day of its Steeplechase meeting. The weather was fine and the track in easy condition, but good for winter going. The totalisator handled £16,481 10s, as compared-with £18,172 on the opening day last year. An inquiry into the running of Minority in the Hawera Handicap was opened and adjourned till Saturday. A. E. Lord, rider of Aussie Ra in the Egmont Steeplechase, was fined £5 for careless riding.
