UNITED COMMAND
OVER ALLIED FORCES IN CRETE GREEK PRIME MINISTER’S ANNOUNCEMENT. APPEAL TO ALL RANKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 5. Major-General Freyberg's appointment was announced in an order of the day by the Prime Minister, M. Tsouderos, reading: “In order better to conduct the struggle alongside Britain, the Greek Government has decided to place the Allied troops in Crete under a single command to which MajorGeneral Freyberg is appointed. We appeal to all officers and other ranks, to fulfil, under his command, their* duty to their country and to the King, with discipline, self-denial and courage. We possess the united support of the courageous Cretan people, who for generations were the indomitable champions of national liberty. From this war. in which Crete is the last but impregnable rampart of Greece, our country will emerge victorious and great”. The “Daily Telegraph’s" Cairo correspondent says two full divisions of the Greek Army have arrived in Crete and probably a steady trickle of soldiers from Greece, via the Greek islands, will continue for some time.
