NAZI LYING

PERSISTENT RATHER THAN INSPIRED. Wherever else the Germans may be hiding their secret weapons of overwhelming power and novelty, they have certainly nothing new to show us in the sphere of falsehood, comments a British exchange. As liars they are persistent rather than inspired: the poverty of their invention is revealed once more in the claim that they have gone into Bulgaria because the British were meditating a descent on that country. So with Norway, so with Denmark. so with Holland and Belgium. Nobody believed them then and nobody will believe them now: and there is. of course, not the slightest reason to suppose that they believe the tale themselves: the only reason why it is brought out again is because they cannot think of a better. It seems a curious feat to have risked—and achieved —a world-wide reputation for hard lying on the strength of such a limited repertory. It is an odd reputation. Nobody believes a German and nobody—even after all this practice—expects them to produce a really new or effective falsehood.
