NATIONAL WELFARE
MASTERTON LEAGUE MEETING YEAR’S WORK. MANY PHASES OF ACTIVITY. The annual meeting of the Women's National Welfare League was held in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Miss Kummer presided. There were also present: Mesdames T. F. Watson. R. C. Drummond, J. M. Coradine, H. E. Pither, M. Scharnweber, W. L. Hunter, F. Garland, H. P. Harrison, R. Whyborn, V/. Andrew, Ji 8.. Carruthers, A. W. McKenzie, A. Henderson, S. Fletcher, F. C. Daniell. G. G. Tolhurst, S. L. P. Free, F. Reynaids, S. J. Munn. S. N. Kilgour, the Misses Guild, Bellis, Wilson, M. Cameron and N. Boddington.
Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames T. Jordan, H. P. Glen, J. Caselberg, E. T. Coleman. James Andrew, Misses Vallance (2) and C.
* Cameron. 1 A motion of sympathy was passed s with Mrs A. W. Charleson in her be- ’ reavement. In commenting on the annual report s and balance sheet Mrs Fletcher con- ' gratulated the president, treasurer and ■ secretary on the splendid results achieved. A generous donation was received 2 from Mrs Dunderdale Sent-., and the league tendered her its sincere thanks. Miss Kummer thanked all members > and officers for their work during , ' the year. , ; A posy was presented as an apprecia- ■ tion of Miss Kummer's work. All executive officers were presented with shoulder sprays and Mrs Scharnweber [. was thanked for her work in making L the sprays. Mrs Fletcher commented on the beautiful wreath placed on the Mem- ■ orial on Anzac Day. Miss Boddington mentioned that a large number of members’ subscriptions were overdue. She considered : that the incoming treasurer could re-, medy the position by appealing to the members concerned and remind them that the work of the league would be assisted by the payment of subscriptions. A letter was received from the A.N.A. Club, Wellington, thanking the league for goods forwarded to it. Mrs Whyborn was appointed to collect. pack and forward a hamper for this month. The hospital report showed that two visits were paid to the public hospital during April. Cakes, flowers and books were distributed, also teas as usual to No. 6 Ward. ] The visitors for May'are Mrs H. P. Harrison and Miss Beiliss. Mrs Fletcher! was asked to represent the league on the Hospital Board. Mrs McKenzie reported on social welfare work during April. Milk, fish and clothing were given where required. Boots were needed for a family of six. A good assortment of clothing was generously donated. The league will visit Buchanan Home in May. Mrs Carruthers will arrange date and cars. Mrs Fletcher proposed that she be allowed, on behalf of the league, to < arrange that the Ten Commandments ] be placed in all elementary schools as their national laws were founded on 1 these commandments.
The secretary reported on a conference of women's organisations held last month regarding social evils. A /further meeting would be held on May 28 and Mesdames Fletcher and Kilgour were appointed to attend. The election of officers resulted: President, Miss Kummer (re-elected): vice-presidents, Mesdames T. Jordan, G. G. Tolhurst, S. Fletcher, R. C. Drummond, H. E. Pither; hon. secretary, Mrs S. N. Kilgour; hen. treasurer. Mrs S. J. Munn; hon. auditor. Mr N. H. James; convenors, hospital. Miss Bellis, Buchanan Homo, Mrs J. B. Carruthers, blind work, Mrs H. E. Pither, lighthouse work, Mrs S. N. Kilgour; delegates to Red Cross, Mrs H. P. Harrison and Miss Guild. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr James for auditing the books, Mr J. J. Hunter for printing the ribbon for the Anzac wreath, the Press, and to all friends for help received during the year.
The executive entertained members at afternoon tea .
