TOBRUK BATTLE
ENEMY PENETRATION OF DEFENCES NOT CONSIDERED IMPORTANT. ONLY OUTER PERIMETER PASSED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) RUGBY, May 2. A communique from British headquarters in the Middle East states: “The enemy attack on Tobruk first mentioned in yesterday's communique took place at night, when tanks penetrated the south-western part of the cuter perimeter defences. This would not be a particularly difficult operation because the outer defences probably consist of small posts with barbed wire between.” Fighting is reported to be still in progress.
