A daring and effective daylight raid was made by the R.A.F. yesterday on the German submarine base of Den Helder, in Holland and oil storage tanks a few miles west of Rotterdam. In spite of intense anti-aircraft fire, the attack was pressed home, the bombers flying as low as 200 feet and even 50 feet above the targets. Direct hits were scored on a power station and barracks and buildings were blown sky-high. German troops were also machine-gunned. A stick of bombs also fell across lock gates. A 5000-ton enemy oil tanker is believed to have been badly damaged off the Netherlands coast. Last night another attack was made on Brest where the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau are still sheltering. Only one British plane is missing. There was no enemy air activity over Britain today. OFFICIAL REPORT LOW LEVEL ONSLAUGHTS. IN FACE OF INTENSE FIRE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 9.47 a.m.) RUGBY. May 2. An Air Ministry communique states: “Yesterday afternoon Blenheim aircraft of the Bomber Command made an effective raid on the German submarine base at Den Helder. They came in very low, through intense anti-air-craft fire, to deliver the attack. Clouds of smoke and debris were thrown all over the dock. Direct hits were seen on a power station and barracks. Other buildings and German troops were machine-gunned at Den Helder and on the Island of Tevel. Other aircraft of the same command carried out attacks on oil storage tanks at Vlaardingen and on enemy shipping off the Dutch coast during the day. “An oil tanker of about 5,000 tons is believed to have been badly damaged. “At night aircraft of the Coastal Command attacked the docks at Brest. “An aircraft of the Bomber Command is missing.”
