THERMOPYLAE HERO
COLONEL OF THE MAORI BATTALION REFUSAL TO ENDANGER MEN. REMAINS TO BE KILLED OR TAKEN PRISONER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) LONDON. May 1. The Colonel of the Maori Battalion was the hero of Thermopylae Pass. Exhausted, he ordered his men to leave hirn behind. They protested, but he made them obey. Rather than endanger his men, he remained behind, to be either killed or taken prisoner.
COMPOSITION OF FORCE BRITISH & ANZAC UNITS. SOME GREEKS EVACUATED. '(Received This Day, 1.10 p.m.) CAIRO, May 1. It is revealed that the Empire forces in Greece comprised 51 per cent British and 49 per cent Anzacs. The Anzac Corps totalled 26,000 men. The United Kingdom provided practically all the expedition’s gunners, in addition to an armoured brigade and support groups. - Although no figures have been given, it is believed that all the Greeks who wished to leave were also evacuated.
