WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

SOLWAY-MANAIA MEETING. PATRIOTIC AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. The monthly meeting of the Sol-way-Manaia Women's Institute was held in the Epiphany Hall yesterday, Mrs Diamond, president, presiding over a fair attendance of members. The meeting was opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the Aspiration, the Institute song, and prayer for peace. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames G. Allan. Church, Cotton. Sinclair. Sutherland, Junr., Davies, Catherall, Sent’., and Miss McAlister. At the meeting members were engaged in sewing quilts for the Red Cross. During the year members of the- Knitting Circle have knitted 30 balaclavas, 12 pairs of mittens, and 5 pullovers and the sewing circle has made 150 garments for the Lady Galway Guild. A report on the half-yearly meeting was given by Mrs Wollett and an address by Mrs Campbell, president of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Federation, j was read by Mrs Diamond. Both were much appreciated. Votes of thanks were passed to the speakers. Competitions resulted as follow: — Cooking, jam tarts, Mrs Wollett 1. Mrs Diamond 2. Mrs Webber 3; best bloom, Miss McAlister 1, Mrs Webber 2, Mrs R. Allan 3; chrysanthemum, Miss Cornicle 1, Mrs Munn 2, Mrs McMichael 3; sewing, Mrs Webber 1, Mrs Carr and Mrs Munn (equal) 2, Mr .Groombridge 4. The roll call. “A War Economy,” was well responded to. The programme for May is as follows: —Roll call, “Sing or Say a Line of Institute Song in Rotation”; cooking, cornflour kisses; sewing, child’s knitted or sewn petticoats; floral competition, posy in egg cup and best bloom. A demonstration on twine stool will be given by Mrs Duckworth. The hostesses will be: Mrs McAlister, Mrs McLeish, Miss J. McAlister and Mrs McGovern. The meeting closed with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand.”
