CROQUET METHODIST CLUB CLOSES SEASON. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Methodist Croquet Club held its closing day in ideal weather. The afternoon took the form of competitions, which were won by the following': — Ladder competition. Miss Martin; angle competition, Mrs W. Vaughan; French competition, Mrs W. Wadham. Mrs Dagleish, president, thanked all members for their co-operation during the Reason and presented prizes to the wininers. Mrs W. Tucker, the winner OWthe half-houi’ tournament, received Mrs E. H. Hawker’s trophy. Mrs E. R. Wilkins was runner-up. Mrs Hodder was declared the most improved player for the year. Afternoon tea was served by the social committee. Members were pleased to have with them the Rev. J. A. Dalgleish and Mrs Dagleish and their son. The lawns will be topdressed as soon as possible.
LEADING TRAINER COMING TO CARTERTON. Some time ago it was stated that Mr T. R. George was likely to transfer his team of 20 racehorses to Carterton. It is now definitely announced that Mr George will shortly be established at Carterton, and will train his large team on the Carterton racecourse, where he will have the course proper to 1 work on and in the event of wet weather, excellent grass roads. This move on the part of the premier trainer of New Zealand, will come as good news to the racing public of the district.
WOMEN’S MEETING WAR SERVICE DISCUSSED. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over a well attended meeting of women of Carterton held in the Dalefield Dairy Co. building last evening. Miss Amy Kane, of the Dominion Council of the Women’s War Auxiliary, delivered an interesting address on ~ the aims and objects of the service required. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. On the motion of Councillor Miss O. W. Wolters and Mrs M. J. Woods, it was decided to form a branch of the Women’s War Sei-vice in Carterton and that-a meeting be held shortly to arrange an executive committee and other matters connected
with the movement. LADIES’ GOLF DRAW FOR SATURDAY. The following is the draw for the fourball competition to be played on the Taratahi links on Saturday (players must go off in the order of the draw from the tee): —Mrs Moroney and Miss I. Corlett v. Miss Berrill and Miss J. Orr; Miss Campbell and Mrs Forbes v. Mrs Harrington and Miss V. Corlett; Mrs Colson and Mrs Robinson v.Miss Smart’and Miss Lawrence; Mrs Murray and Miss Hamer v. Miss Freer and Mrs Court; Mrs Johansen and Miss Armstrong v. Miss J. Booth and Miss Peters; .Mrs Orr v. Miss Lamb. Junior, No. 16 tee, to play 10 holes: — Miss Lindop v. Mrs Knowles; Mrs Martin v. Miss Hurley; Miss Johnson, Miss P. Bredin and Mrs Rogers. Mrs Harrington and Mrs Murray will be in charge of the afternoon tea arrangements.
Personal. Mrs P. Nicholls, of Costly Street, Carterton, who has been ill for some time past was yesterday admitted to the Greytown Hospital. Result of Competitions. Two competitions held over from the recent Gala Day held in Carterton to raise funds for the Heart to Heart Appeal, were drawn in the Council Chambers yesterday under the supervision of Mr P. A. Cole, Town Clerk. The competitions were: —Permanent wave, donated by Miss Freer, won by Mrs W. J. C. Wells; 21b. box chocolates, anonymous donor, won by Miss Juan •.Conwell. i Territorials for Camp. .• . A large number of territorials em- - barked on the . special train which 7* passed through Carterton at 9.10 T o’clock this morning, en route for Palmerston North. The men will participate in military manoeuvres do be held in the first two weeks of May. Card Evening. There was a large attendance at the Boy Scout card party held in the Bandroom last evening. The prizewinners were: —Ladies: Mesdames F. O’Keefe. 1; J. Lenihan, 2; men, Messrs F. Collerton, 1; Wadsworth, 2. Borough Election. By advertisement in another column, nominations are invited, to close at 12 o’clock (noon) on Monday next, for the office of Mayor and for councillors for the Borough of Carterton. Each nomination for the mayoralty is to be accompanied by a statutory deposit of £lO and in respect to councillors a deposit of £3 each is required. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics at Carterton for April were (those for April, 1940, in parentheses): —Births, 6 (5); deaths, 4 (3); marriages, 2 (3). Closed to Heavy Traffic. By an advertisement appearing in today’s issue it will be noticed that the road in the Maungaraki Riding, known as the Wainuioru Road, and that in the Belvedere Riding, known as the Mangaterere Valley Road in the Wairarapa South County, are closed to heavy traffic as from today.
