ANTARCTIC BASES
SUGGESTED BY ADMIRAL BYRD. IN EVENT OF DESTRUCTION OF PANAMA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON. April 30. Rear-Admiral R. Byrd told the Appropriations Committee that the Antarctic could be macle a strategic supply base should the Panama Canal be destroyed. Palmer Land was 500 miles from the southern tip of South America and could be used as a base for ships to cache vital supplies. Little America could be used, as a landing place for plane flights between the United States and Australia.
