PHARMACY BENEFITS

COMMENCING ON MONDAY. MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. An announcement that the pharmacy benefits under the Social Security scheme would be available as from Monday next. May 5. was made yesterday by the Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer. He said that it had been hoped to begin the scheme at the beginning of the month, but in view of the fact that the chemists had just been notified of the details of the scheme, it had been deemed advisable to delay its introduction for a few days. “It should be made clear,” said Mr Nordmeyer, “that the chemist is at complete liberty to co-operate or otherwise with the Government scheme. It is possible that in some cases the chemists' entry into thg. z ,- scheme will be postponed, but it is not" anticipated that this will occur in any substantial number of cases.” POSITION IN MASTERTON. LOCAL CHEMISTS TO CONFER. “A meeting of chemists will be held in. the immediate future to discuss the regulations and problems involved. Until then I have no statement to make." said Mr R. T. Woollams, president of the Wairarapa branch of the Chemists' Service Guild when asked to comment on the Minister's statement. As tho Guild covered the area from Woodville to Featherston, he said, the pharmacy benefits would not be available on May 5. ■
