. The Minister of Finance. Mr Nash, announced last night that Mr W. F. Ward had been appointed actinggovernor of the Reserve Bank for three months as from May 1. Mr Ward has just completed a seven-year term as deputy-governor of the bank. Although he had contemplated some time ago retiring from the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, Mr Simon Dalgliesh, Longbush, in response to numerous requests, has agreed again to offer himself as a candidate representing the Wairarapa South County on the board.

One of Auckland’s oldest residents. Miss Elizabeth Tyler Smith, Epsom, died yesterday in her 101st year, says an Auckland Press Association message. Miss Smith celebrated her 100th birthday last June. Born in Worcestershire, England, in 1840, Miss Smith came to New Zealand with her brother 15 years later. Fifty-eight years of continuous residence in Foxton was terminated last week by the death at her home in Avenue Road of Mrs Alezabeth Aldridge, at the age of 77. She had enjoyed comparatively good health and her sudden passing came as a shock to her family. Mrs Aldridge was born at Port Underwood and went to Foxton after her marriage to Mr William Aldridge in 1883. The death occurred last week of Mr William McKone, at the age of 73 years. Mr McKone was born at Sandy Creek, Warwick, Queensland, and came to New Zealand in 1903. He was a justice of the peace, and was well known in the timber industry, having been associated with sawmilling in the Wairarapa, King Country and Rotorua districts. 111-health caused his retirement some years ago. He leaves a widow and two daughters. Mrs M-. W. Mclver, Mamaku,.and Mrs J. Toland, Ohakune.

The death occurred in a private hospital in Auckland on Sunday of Mr Ernest Roddam Mowbray, of Epsom, Auckland. Mr Mowbray, who was about 66 years old, was born in Wellington, and 'for the greater part of his life lived in that city, having been a resident of Vogeltown for some years. Mr Mowbray was on the committee of the old Wellington Choral Society, and in 1909 was joint secretary of that society with Mr W. E. Caldow, the present secretary of the Royal Choral Union. For some years, Mr Mowbray was accountant for, Messrs Smith and Smith, Ltd., Wellington.
