CROSSING SMASH
ACCIDENT NEAR INVERCARGILL ONE KILLED & FIVE INJURED, ißy Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, April 25. The second fatal accident within four months on the railway, crossing at Kennington, near Invercargill, occurred at 10.15 last night, when one of six occupants of a motor-cai; was killed and the other five injured by collision, with a special goods train bound for Invercargill. All the men but one are connected with Southland racing stables, and were returning home from a dance.
The car was caught broadside on by the cowcatcher and carried along the line about the length of the train before the engine was stopped, and the train had to be backed to disengage it.
The victims were: — Killed: —George Horn, stable hand, employed by W. E. Hazlett. Injured:—George Barclay, aged 30, jockey, employed by R. E. McLean. Stanley Murdoch, aged 19, driver. John O'Connor, agod 20. stable hand, employed by F. W. Ellis. Samuel C. Shaw, aged 16, apprentice jockey, employed by F’ W. Ellis. Kevin R. Ford, aged 19, apprentice jockey, employed by W. E. Hazlett.
