HELPFUL CRITICISM

MEETING OF MASTERTON ART CLUB.

One of the best attendances in the history of the Masterton Art Club gathered in the club rooms, Bannister Street, on Thursday night to hear the monthly criticism of their work by Mr S. B. Maclennan, A.R.C.A., N.R.D. About 20 of those present submitted a wide variety of landscapes, sketches from life, flower studies, pen-and-ink work and caricature, one of the most promising exhibits being a drawing from life by the club’s youngest member, a schoolgirl of 12. Mr Maclennan discussed the strong points of each work, together with its weaknesses and explained how the less successful factors could be avoided in future drawing and painting. Wednesday and Thursday, June 11 and 12 were dates decided upon, tentatively, for the first club exhibition. ■ Mr H. M. Smith agreed to give a talk on bookbinding and modern fabric printing at the next meeting on Tuesday, May 13. Mrs Eric Shaw reported that acknowledgment had been received of a three guinea donation made by the Sketch Club to the Provincial Patriotic Fund.
