PETROL RATIONING
ONLY TWO COUPONS NEXT MONTH NO ALTERNATIVE OPEN. APPEAL TO ALL MOTORISTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 25. The Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, announced today that petrol rationing for May would be on the same basis as from July to October of last year, when two coupons were available each i month. The following will, therefore, be the standard allowances for May: Up to 9.5 horsepower, four gallons; 9.5 horsepower to 14.5 horsepower, six gallons; over 14.5 horsepower, eight gallons. Coupons numbered 27 and 28 will be current. “The Government very much regrets the necessity for a reduction of half a coupon a month, but in view, of the international situation and in the interests of national security it unfortunately had no alternotive,” said Mr Sullivan. “The Government feels, however, that the reduction will be accepted in the right spirit by the motoring public. “I would like again to stress the . importance of conserving petrol as part of the Empire’s war effort and to ask , every motorist to assist by keeping his ' or her consumption down to the lowest 1 possible level.”
