COMMANDER OF AUSTRALIAN TROOPS APPOINTED TO HIGH POST DEPUTY TO GENERAL WAVELL. MR MENZIES ON WAR DEMANDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 23. Aii announcement that Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Blarney has been appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the British and . Imperial forces in the Middle East Command was made by the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, in a broadcast tonight. General Blarney has been General Officer Commanding the Australian forces in the field. “Australia has large interests and large commitments in the Middle East,” he said, “and I have recently been discussing with the General Staff in London the possibilities of utilising to the full the very skilled services of Sir Thomas Blarney. It is with great satisfaction that I can tell you that his handling of the forces in Greece has been so efficient that it has been decided that he be given the new position. This will give pleasure to all our countrymen, I am sure.”
