FIERCE STAND
MADE BYv NEW ZEALANDERS IN POSITIONS COVERING LARISSA. ENEMY EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT. (By-Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) LONDON, April 23. The German News Agency has distributed an eyewitness account of the fierce and stubborn resistance of the New Zealanders before the Germans captured Larissa. It says: “The New Zealand wounded fired on the attackers. The New Zealanders built up a well-camouflaged and well-placed position in the Tempe Pass. The terrain and numerous anti-tank weapons gave them an advantage over the German force employed. On account of the narrow pass, there was just room for two tanks, and a rifle company of New Zealanders, situated on both sides of the valley and mountains, fired on the attacking force. One New Zealand defence position after another was taken after fierce and stubborn fighting. The enemy defended himself skilfully and stubbornly.”
