News was received yesterday that Miss Tui Van Staveren, who is so keenly interested in air raid precautions, will visit Masterton, and has consented to be the speaker on that subject at the annual mother and son tea, to be held on May 12, at the Masterton Y.M.C.A. rooms. Non-inflammable Petrol. In the course of an address at the Masterton Rotary Club this afternoon, Mr A. C. Tatton showed members a sample of special aeroplane petrol which was' non-inflammable and was largely in use in America. The petrol was obtained by distillation at high temperature. Water from Petrol. “When a gallon of petrol is burned inside the modern engine approximately one gallon of water is produced,” said Mr A. C. Tatton in an address on the automobile industry at the Masterton Rotary Club today. The water was produced from the combustion of the gasoline within the engine. When the engine became warmed up most of the water was expelled as steam. Donations of Clothing. The Masterton sub-centre of the Red Cross Society gratefully acknowledge receipt of gifts of parcels of clothing from the following donors: —Mrs A. Caselberg, Mrs Penistone, Mrs G. Williams, Miss Heaven, Rongokokako Women’s Institute, Masterton Hospital, Mrs Shoosmith, Mrs Miller, Miss Chalmers, Mrs O. Bunny, Mrs Ashworth, Mrs S. L. Free; Miss P. Wylie. Rakantti Women’s Institute, Anonymous parcels. Growth of Motor Industry. “The total New Zealand investments in motor vehicles and equipment rose from £5.100.000 in 1914 to over £6G,000,000 in 1938.’ said Mr A. C. Tatton in stressing the growth of the motor industry in this country, when giving an address al the Masterton Rotary Club today. The cost of maintenance of New Zealand's fleet of motor vehicles, repair shops, garage equipment, spare'" parts, etc., had increased from £828,000 in 1914 to £9,890,000 in 1937. Y.M.C.A. Gymnasium. The attention of readers is drawn to an advertisement appearing in today's issue for the benefit of parents and those desirous of placing boys and girls under the tuition of efficient instructors in physical culture and gymnasium classes, which will commence the 1941 season at the Y.M.C.A. on Monday next. The male classes will be under the supervision of Mr Avon Tatton and assistants, and those of the girls' classes Miss Spiers will supervise. Enrolments are already being made at the secretary's office, and the many on-, quiries that have been made regarding these classes show the keen interest .and popularity of this section of the (Y.M.C.A. work among the youth of Master ton.
: Meeting Lapses.
The anual meeting of the Gladstone branch of the Farmers’ Union, which was to have been held last night, lapsed for want of a quorum. National Party Meeting. A meeting of the Masterton branch of the National Party was held in Masterton last night when matters of a domestic nature were discussed. E.P.S. (“B” Company). The parade advertised for Monday next, 28th instant, at 7 p.m., will be held in the Municipal Hall, and not in the Mascot Garage, as the latter building is now leased and. is consequently no longer available for Emergency Reserve Corps use. Slum Clearance Bill. A Slum Clearance Bill has been drafted by the Minister of Housing (Mr Armstrong), but, according to an announcement made by the Minister, it has still to be considered by Cabinet. There is provision in the draft Bill for ordering the reconstruction of any existing building, whether owned privately or by a State Department, and for bringing it up to a state satisfactory to the Director of Housing. In the event of it being impossible to put the house into decent repair, the Bill provides for demolition. Pharmaceutical Benefits. Regulations making provision for pharmaceutical benefits were gazetted last evening and they are to come into force on a day to be appointed by the Minister of Health. The regulations provide that the proprietor of any pharmacy may enter into a contract with the Government to supply all or any of the types of drugs and medicines covered by the regulations. Payment will be made to him in accordance with the rates laid down by the Pharmacy Plan Committee and now adopted by chemists as their pricing system, less a discount of 21 per cent.
