MODERN NATIVE SCHOOL
OPENED BY PRIME MINISTER AT ROTORUA. i.By Telegraph—Press Association J ROTORUA, April 22. The Whakarewarewa Native School, one of the largest and undoubtedly the most modern in the Dominion, was officially opened today by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. There were also present the Minister of Education, MiMason, the member of the Executive Council representing the Maori race, Mr Paikea, Sir Apirama Ngala, several other Parliamentarians and the. Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett.
The school's erection was due principally to Mr Fraser's keen interest and activity when he held the education portfolio.
The school committee chairman, Mr H. Dansey, appealed for more Government assistance, not financial, but encouragement of the active work of the Women’s Health League, led by Mrs Fraser. “We cannot beautify Rotorua without elevating the domestic conditions of the Maori. There is not a single bachelor among the Tuhourangi people who is eligible and not on active service, and it is our duty to see that they have suitable homes to return to," he said.
