VISIT TO TAUPO

GOVERNOR-GENERAL TALKS WITH SCHOOL CHILDREN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 22. The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, accompanied by Lady Newall and their son Francis, and attended by Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, A.D.C., inspected the Taupo Home Guard yesterday. Later, as the result of a wish Sir Cyril had expressed, the vice-regal party met the children attending the Taupo School, quickly overcoming the children’s shyness. About 150 members of the Home Guard paraded for the inspection, and showed their appreciation of Sir Cyril’s interest by the smartness of their bearings. The men came to Taupo from points as far distant as Tokaanu, Atiamuri and Mokai. Sir Cyril spoke to most of the returned soldiers on parade.

Immediately after the Home Guard parade the party went to the Taupo School, where the children had been assembled in the grounds. Sir Cyril and Lady Newall at once established themselves with the children and chatted with them freely, particularly with the Maoris. Though at first very shy, the Maori children soon responded to the friendly influence of their Excellencies and ended by singing two plaintive melodies of farewell.
