The Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Marketing, is leaving Wellington for the north tonight.

Flight Lieutenant F. J. McWhinnie spent the weekend visiting his relatives in Masterton. Messrs J. Ronald and Ellison (Wellington) and W. Parnell (Palmerston North) booked in yesterday at the Hotel Midland, Masterton. Dr. A. W. Wilkinson, medical superintendent of the Northern Wairoa Hospital for the past four years, has resigned, having accepted the position of assistant-medical superintendent of the military hospital in Hanmer. , It was announced yesterday that the following had been elected to the central executive of the New Zealand Labour Party: Mr R. Eddy, the Hon. T. Brindle. M.L.C., Mr J. O. Johnson, Mrs Semple, and Mr P. Dowse: Mr R. McKeen, M.P., was runner-up. The retirement at the end of this month of Mr W. R. McKean, Auckland’s principal stipendiary magistrate, is announced. Mr McKean was appointed to the Bench in 1919, coming to Auckland the following year. He became the principal stipendiary magistrate three years ago. Flying Officer C. A. Pownall, who has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for meritorious services in the Middle East, is a nephew of the late Mr C. A. Pownall, of Masterton. A younger sister of Flying Officer Pownall is on the staff of the Masterton Public Hospital. Mr P. J. O’Brien, of the staff of the Canterbury Museum, Christchurch, returned by the Mariposa, which arrived at Auckland on Friday, after seven months’ study in the United States under a Carnegie grant. Mr O’Brien spent five months in San Francisco and the remainder of the time in visiting the country’s principal museums, his chief interests being taxidermy and the general display and arrangement of exhibits.

K. Roigard, a former Opaki Rugby player, is a member of the Second Division Army team in the Middle East. He recently sent to Mr M. Welch, of Opaki, a photograph of the team in which he is playing and which won its first match by 12 points to three. Another ex-Opaki player, E. Hargood, who more lately played for the Masterton Club, is now a member of the Forestry Rugby team in England. In a match against the Maoris, the latter defeated the Forestry team by 9 points to 3. He has been selected to play in a representative match against Wales and reports that he is fit and well.
