LAWN TENNIS

UNITED CLUB’S SEASON CLOSED YANKEE TOURNAMENT HELD. DANCE IN THE EVENING. The official closing of the United Lawn. Tennis Club's season was held at the chib's courts, Dixon Street, on Saturday afternoon in beautifully fine weather. A Yankee tournament was held, for which the entries were very good. The event was won by Miss V. Watson and Mr J. Harrington. Afternoon, tea was served. On Saturday night an enjoyable dance was held at the Y.M.C.A. Hall, at which there was a large attendance. The music was supplied by Mrs J. R. Dickson and Mr G. Longworth and the duties of M.C. were capably carried out by Mr J. C. Corbishley. Trophies won during the season were presented by the president, Mr J. T. Jameson. Mr Jameson congratulated the winners on their success and stated that the club had experienced a successful year despite war conditions.

Trophies were awarded as follows: Men's championship singles, Mr P. Hawksworth; men's E grade championship singles, Mr H. Vollheim; ladies A grade singles, Mrs J. Beetham; ladies’ B grade singles. Miss' M. McLaren; men’s championship doubles, Messrs P. Hawksworth and P. Rishworth; men's handicap singles, Mr B. M. Hurley; ladies’ handicap singles, Mrs P. Jones; ladies handicap doubles, Mrs Jones and Miss R. Percy; combined doubles, Miss N. Smith and Mr J. A. Kennedy; men’s doubles. Messrs N. G. F. Whiteman and G. V. Buick.

PARK CLUB SEASON'S CLOSING FUNCTION. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent by a large number of the members of the Masterton Park Tennis Club on Saturday, at the home of the club's president, Mr L. S. Nicol, Upper Plain, when the season was officially closed and the trophies won during the year were presented. Mr Nicol welcomed the members present, and commented on the happy atmosphere which had characterised the club’s activities for the year, and which had made the season a successful one in. spite of reduced membership due to the unsettled conditions because of the war.

A delightful afternoon tea was served by Mrs Nicol, and Mr L. Morgan, the club captain, thanked Mr and Mrs Nicol for their hospitality. The trophies for the season were presented by Mr Nicol to the following:— Ladies' championship singles: Miss M. Pownail. Men’s championship singles: Mr C. N. O’Kane. Ladies' junior championship singles: Miss J. Matthews. Men's junior championship singles: Mi’ A. Howes. Ladies’ championship doubles: Misses M. West and I. Reader. Men’s championship doubles: Messrs R. McEwen and L. Morgan. Men’s handicap singles: Mr J. H. Blair. Men's handicap doubles: Messrs C. N. O'Kane and T. McGovern. , *
